Whakatane

February 9

bay of plentyPacked everything up and headed out of town. Got a ride with a Danish couple, Younis and Suzanne. We all went to the Kiwi Plantation "Kiwifruit Country" near Te Puke. We rode around in a giant Kiwi orchard and packing plant.

We stopped in Whakatane, had some lunch at a cafe and set up camp in a caravan park. We ran into Michael again. We walked down to the riverhead and found some shells, saw a Maori cave, a waterfall, and a very big rock. Donna's leg was hurting and I got blisters on both feet. We limped back after having Kentucky Fried Chicken for dinner.

Gisborne

February 10

HitchhikingWe had potatoes for breakfast and packed it all up and walked out of town. We hitchhiked on the highway out of town. We got a ride with some locals to Ohope Beach. Then we got a ride with Bob in his green Toyota Corolla. He was from Washington. We went along the east coast highway through Opotiki. We had a swim at Whanarua Bay. Had lunch at Te Araroa and drove on to Gisborne.

We camped on the beach and saw an awesome sunset. This is one of the best campgounds we stayed at, located right on the beach and walking distance to town. Had pizza for Dinner. Took some photos of Wainai Beach at Gisborne. The water was very cold. The sunset was incredible that evening.

Masterton

Gisborne CampgroundTook down the tent and packed everything up and drove to the lookout over Gisborne. We saw the landing beach that Captain Cook landed. As we went south we talked about farming stuff. We drove through a herd of cows and saw a flock of sheep being corralled by dogs and a shepherd. We stopped in Napier, had lunch, and went to the Kiwi house. We saw two Kiwis, a night Heron, and owls. We also had a walk downtown and looked at the Art Deco architecture. This town was rebuilt after an earthquake in 1931. Photo with Pania of the reef. We continued driving south to Masterton. Set up camp after having Chinese food. Then walked around Queen Park. Saw a lot of birds in cages, ducks
